A Short Story about the Highest Village in Spain. Vilaflor

Anciently known by the name of Chasna, Vilaflor was head of the district of Abona in Tenerife [the largest of the Canary Islands].  The story behind the name is that it owes its name to the Spanish exclamation on encountering a beautiful native girl.   “I saw the flower of Chasna” … [Vi la flor de Chasna].

At an altitude of 1,160 metres above sea level, Vilaflor is one of the prettiest approaches to Mount Teide – Tenerife’s mountain – through flower filled hillsides and volcanic scenery.  It also has the title of being the highest town, or village, in Spain and also claims to have some of the cleanest air on the planet - hence it being very popular for stargazing.

Vilaflor has lush forests, traditional crops and intricate terraces and you can feel its history and traditional with every step.  The vines of Vilaflor produce dry white wines and the village has its own natural spring whose waters are bottled and sold all over Tenerife.

The most popular hotel in Vilaflor is the Spa Villalba Hotel – a 4 star hotel opened in 2004 and built in typical Canarian style, with only 23 rooms.  There is an outdoor swimming pool and facilities you would expect from a spa hotel.

The main street in Vilaflor is Calle Santo Domingo which leads up to a large plaza with an imposing 17th century church – Iglesia de San Pedro.  From this plaza you can take the short, but steep, walk up to Mirador San Roque from where you will be rewarded with spectacular views over the slopes of southern Tenerife.

If you are looking to buy some local arts and crafts, you will find some craft centres on the outskirts of Vilaflor.
